The episode featured creepy operatic excerpts, all leaning toward the supernatural and all composed in the twentieth century. At the time, I had such a plethora of material that I produced a bonus episode of material that otherwise would have ended up in the dung heap (like the body of Faust at the end of Schnittke\u2019s <em>Faust Cantata<\/em>, which closes the episode). We hear music from <em>Damn Yankees<\/em> featuring the red-hot Gwen Verdon; Dvo\u0159\u00e1k\u2019s<em> Rusalka <\/em>(a stunning duet with Teresa Stratas and Gwendolyn Killebrew); Respighi\u2019s comic opera <em>Belfagor<\/em> (in which a devil [Lajos Miller] encounters his superior in a cunning young woman [Sylvia Sass]; Ernest Bloch\u2019s <em>Macbeth<\/em> (in which Inge Borkh gives a luminous performance of Lady Macbeth\u2019s Sleepwalking Scene); Willem Pijper\u2019s strange musical drama based on the medieval legend of Halewijn, a Bluebeard of the Lowlands; <em>La Chute de la Maison Usher<\/em>, (the climax of Claude Debussy\u2019s incomplete opera based on Edgar Allan Poe\u2019s <em>Fall of the House of Usher<\/em>); and <em>Antikrist<\/em>, Rued Langgaard\u2019s unique, indescribable, and nearly unstageable mystery play.
